It’s 3 a.m. at a weigh station on a highway you’ve never been down, and tonight’s bulletin is very specific about what is allowed through.
Trucks pull in out of the dark. You check the driver against the manifest, the manifest against the bulletin, the cargo against your own two eyes. Then you pass them, turn them away, or pick up the phone — and you’d better be right, because the station keeps score, and some of what arrives is not what it says it is.
Five nights. Sodium lamps, static, and procedure. The procedure is what keeps you safe. Probably.
